WHAT IS A LOGO


LOGO is an abbreviate form of LOGOTYPE, taken after modifications from the Greek language. It’s designed in the form of a graphic mark, an emblem or as a symbol. It is used to support and promote an Organization itself into the public and attain recognition. It may be an abstract or a symbolic design or may contain the text of the Organization’s name.

In around sixteenth century, a logo consisted of a group of letters, which used to be independent (not connected) as in Garamond model.  Whereas, in another form of logo, two or more letters were combined or connected to attain a structure, though they did not become a word. This form is called as Ligature. Further, this combination of letters included combination of various styles of alphabet together. In the present scenario, a company’s logo represents its brand in the market. In 18th and 19th centuries, due to industrial revolution and industrialization in various parts of the world, a boom for advertising industry took place, which combined typography and imagery together.

PURPOSE OF A LOGO

Almost every business sector whether in production, trading, service, etc consists of competition. A LOGO design should consist of five important things :

1.       Memorable : A logo should be able to capture people’s mind. They should be able to remember and recognize it easily.

2.       Uncomplicated : A logo should be so simple and wholesome, that it depicts only heart of the company’s products and services.

3.       Adaptable : Logo of the company will be used widely right from stationary to website, social media, advertisements, billboards, etc worldwide. Hence, it should be adaptable from as small as 2mm spacing to 50m spacing or more comfortably.

4.       Suitable : Certain sectors of business go by certain masculine, feminine or neutral colors. Designer should consider the nature of business while designing the logo. Target audience or customers should be considered while adopting the color or its range.

5.       Everlasting : Logo is something, which should get imprinted in the minds of customers.  Logo should never be modified or changes as per the trends.  It creates a confusion in customer’s mind. There are certain logos of few companies, that are lasting since decades. A meager logo reminds the customer of its products or services. Hence, consistency is most important. Else, there is a probability of losing loyal customers due inconsistency shown by the company.
